Metapack Summer Academy – more than just a student internship

Ambitious computer science students waste no time in the summer. During the fourth edition of the summer academy for young IT specialists, eight students developed their skills under the supervision of experienced employees of the Metapack Poland company from Zielona Góra.

Not Just Encoding

Metapack Summer Academy is an initiative created for IT students who want to connect their future with code development. Its aim is to familiarize young people with good code writing practices, but not only. The project participants also had the opportunity to demonstrate soft skills related to effective team work. In the IT industry, it requires efficient communication with people with different levels of experience and competences.

We focus on teaching talented, ambitious students. Although no commercial work for the company is carried out during the internship, we know that it is worth doing.

Eight students from Zielona Góra took part in the fourth edition of the summer academy. They learned under the supervision of eleven specialists who work at Metapack on a daily basis. Young people created their projects in pairs, which was an additional difficulty. Working on someone else’s code or persuading another developer to work on their own is often one of the biggest challenges in this industry.

80% practice, 20% theory

Above all, however, the Metapack Summer Academy project was created to teach specific skills. Young people wasted no time on theory. Among the hard skills that they had a chance to develop, there were, among others: working with databases, good practices of writing clean code, developing and implementing design patterns, conducting unit tests. In addition, they had the opportunity to work on many tools and modern technologies, such as: New Relic, Grafana, Amazon Web Services and Gatling. Many of these technologies are new to the Zielona Góra market that no IT company in the region offers.

Awards? Trip to London and a job

Four people who participated in the summer academy received an employment offer from Metapack Poland. Thanks to flexible working hours, they can combine work and studies. The two best participants will also visit the Metapack office in London. In this project, everyone wins – all participants had a unique opportunity to see how software used all over the world is produced “from the inside”.

Where did the idea for Academy come from? Kasia says:

We have been cooperating with the University of Zielona Góra for a long time, listening to the needs of students, but also looking for a source of talent. We decided to introduce something innovative to the market. We are not afraid to say that our Academy is the best in the city in terms of internships - the amount of knowledge provided in 4 weeks by experienced specialists, who are also willing to share their knowledge, is always a big surprise among students.
