Meetings with UZ students

In January we organize a series of meetings with young people studying at the University of Zielona Góra at the Faculty of Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Automation. Find out why we invite students to our premises and what they can learn during these meetings.

Industry of the future, meaning what?

As one of our Metapackers, Darek, who prepared one of the lectures for students’ visits, notes, e-commerce is a very prospective industry and extremely developing both from the point of view of the diversity of courier services, but also from the point of view of IT and technologies used to implement these services on the Metapack platform. We want to make young people studying in this field aware of this diversity and show them possible career paths, which are now almost unlimited.

We operate in a difficult, but very interesting industry, not easy to describe in a few sentences. Such meetings are a great opportunity to share this with people who - perhaps - will join us sometime in the future or today as students

Darek

We want to present to students the profile of our business so that when applying here they are aware of what we do, how important it is what we do, and in which industry we operate.

Ela from the implementation department

We want to show young people that global technologies and solutions are in their reach- they don’t have to travel to larger cities or abroad to acquire really high skills.

For students, it is certainly a great incentive to find out that there are IT companies on the local market that create powerful systems. Not a small online store, but huge back-end systems used by major e-commerce players around the world. Someone who is interested in technologies, wants to act, program using the greatest technologies, here has the opportunity to do it.

Darek

We have prepared a few lectures for students. We tried to comprehensively, but in an accessible way, demontrate our place in the world of e-commerce business, explain our organizational culture based on values such as communication, cooperation, continuous development, show technologies that give us an advantage on the market and the development and maintenance of our product.

We devoted a lot of space to discussing the technology we use at work every day. Our engineer Łukasz took care of this part of the workshop:

I talked about the technologies we use to make the software we produce here available to clients. How we use the global cloud, and also about what we are proud of, i.e. our monitoring systems, our requirements and ecosystem of tools we have created around it. I tried to show the scale of what we do here and give other large companies that use similar solutions as a reference. They include Netflix, Facebook and Google.

From a meeting to a job interview?

Are we also looking for people to join our team among UZ students? Of course. For young people studying, we have various options: participation in our Summer Academy or taking up an internship. We can also offer a part-time work, adapted to the schedule at the university.

Skills and experience are essential. However, what we value most is the right attitude that comes down to creativity, openness and willingness to be a team player. Darek sums it up perfectly:

The market trend today is that, when hiring young people and others into an IT company, you don't ask: 'How many programming languages do you know?'. Today, it is important to have the right approach to work, responsibility and teamwork. Knowledge of languages is of secondary importance, because you can learn languages within a few months, and that's pretty good. Hard skills can always be learned, especially in the age of different frameworks that are currently used. Team-thinking is more important and we try to emphasize this when talking with candidates.

Darek

What to do to join us? Simply contact us:

If, after such a meeting, someone directly says that at this moment he or she is ready to add a professional path to the path of learning, we will be happy to consider such a candidacy.

Wiktor from the HR department

More visits ahead

For students who have not had the opportunity to meet us, but would like to get to know us better, we have good news – we will conduct study visits again. We plan to enrich the next meetings with our experiences from the present one:

We draw conclusions, adjust the formula of meetings so that they are more and more attractive and meet the expectations of the participants. We have lots of ideas how to implement them.

Wiktor

What do we think about the January meetings?

I got the impression that the students were listening with interest to what we wanted to tell them. Much of what we said was new to them and therefore very interesting.

Ela

For me, the fact that people are interested in this is a good sign for the future. What we do and what technologies we use, because these technologies allow us to be a leader and a major player when it comes to delivery management systems in the world.

Darek

And what do the students themselves think about the meetings?

We asked them how they ended up in Metapack, what they learned and how they plan to develop their careers:

I showed up at the Metapack meeting because one of the lecturers at the university had given us such an opportunity. I found it quite an interesting idea to see how an IT company works. I am planning - once I gain my engineer title - to start operating in the industry full-time. Such meetings allow us to actually see what it all looks like in companies, what is useful and what I should focus on.

Aleksander

We wanted to see how the company functions, how it looks inside. Before coming here, we knew Metapack was an IT company, but we didn't really know what it did. After this meeting, everything brightened up, we have already discussed the entire ordering process, there is an even more technological lecture ahead of us.

Marcin and Dominik

We learned what the company does, what the parcel delivery process looks like and where Metapack is based. Previously, I only knew that such a company exists and that it is a strictly IT company. Professionally, I aim for positions related to software testing and now I know that Metapack also offers such opportunities. There are quite a few of them, so let's see what happens next. Especially since I would like to stay in Zielona Góra after my studies.
